Pros
  • Covers two real price tiers, including an honest budget option under $300
  • Every desk on this list was measured in an actual studio-apartment layout, not a showroom
Cons
  • Four of the seven desks we tested did not make the final cut — see 'what we ruled out' below

We tested seven standing desks over six weeks specifically in apartments under 700 square feet, rotating each one through the same corner of a 9'x10' room to judge how it actually feels against a wall, not in open showroom space.

Our top pick: Fully Jarvis Bamboo

Covered in full in our standalone review — the short version is that the dual-motor stability at full height and the 7-year warranty make it the one we'd tell a friend to buy first, even though it's the most expensive desk on this list.

What we ruled out, and why

Four of the seven desks we tested didn't make this list. Two had single motors that visibly struggled past 44" with a monitor arm attached. One had a crossbar low enough that it caught on three different desk chairs we tried. One was genuinely fine but is currently back-ordered for 11+ weeks, which disqualifies it from a "buy this now" list.

How to actually measure your space before buying

Before you buy anything, add 30 inches of clearance behind the chair for standing and sitting transitions — this is the single most common mistake we see in small-apartment setups, and it's why a desk that looks fine in a product photo ends up feeling cramped.

Our verdict

If budget allows, the Jarvis Bamboo is still the one we'd buy again. If it's out of range, we'd rather you buy a smaller, stiffer desk than a wide, wobbly one — stability at the height you actually work at matters more than surface area.

Frequently asked questions

What's the smallest desk width that's still usable?

We wouldn't go under 40" for a primary work desk with a monitor — anything narrower works for a laptop-only setup but gets cramped fast with a second screen.

Do cheaper desks wobble more?

Generally yes, but not always — the budget pick on this list surprised us by being stiffer at full height than one of the pricier desks we ruled out.
